What time is it? Eurovision time!

Well! I am about to graduate, and I have been taking the last few days very, very slowly, enjoying the feeling of the absence of homework. Alleluia! As a result, I have nothing serious to say today. It is, however, Eurovision time! I love the Eurovision Song Contest because of its glorious mix of politics, camp, misuse of the English language, and occasional moments of outright hilarity.

So, without further ado, here are my FAVORITE Eurovision songs of the year! Disclaimer: there are no ballads here because I'm really not a fan of them.

Most absurd: Greece, “Alcohol is Free”
As Sweetie said to me last night, "Is this... Greek ska? With bouzoukis?"

Most bizarre music video and questionable English lyrics: Ukraine, “Gravity”
Nothing comes from dreams but dreams. Nothing comes from this video but something directed by Lisa Frank.

Best use of bagpipes (and yes, they're probably called something other than bagpipes): Bulgaria, “Samo Shampioni”
Because bagpipes.

Most dramatic stylistic clash (opera singer + club beat + odd use of English language + dubstep): Romania, “It’s My Life”
Fun fact: this is not the first time in Eurovision history this has happened. Check out Bulgaria's entry from a couple of years ago.

Best singer with little likelihood of actually winning: France, “L’Enfer et moi”
I would listen to a whole album of this.

Potential winner with enough subtle bizarreness and legitimately good live vocals: Norway, “I Feed You My Love”
A little bit of Bjork-esque bizarreness (which I love) meets slightly silly English lyrics (I feed you my love? How does that work?) meets female power vocals (which I also love).

Of course, these are not the only exemplary Eurovision entries this year. Happy listening!
